New Zodiac Signs

There is a lot of controversy over the suggestion to include new zodiac signs. There is a lot of debate on whether the change in zodiac signs will affect the precision of the astrology and numerology charts that already exist. Many astrologers and numerologists make a claim that the Earth’s axis has shifted gradually over the last 2000 years causing the zodiac sign dates to shift as well.

Astronomers are claiming that the sun goes through not 12 but 13 constellations in the sky. People however feel that the existing 12 constellations system is apt and matches their traits. The 13-constellation system would have the inclusion of a 13th new zodiac sign called Ophiuchus. This is one of the new zodiac sign that has caused a lot of hype in the media.

Ophiuchus is basically a constellation that is found in the southern part of the sky and comprises of a white dwarf star. Since May 2009 scientists studied the behavior of this white dwarf star, which was seemed to be brightness when cooled. However the discovery of Ophiuchus and the proposal of making it a new zodiac sign has been as recent as 2011.

This constellation falls right in between Scorpio and Sagittarius and is denoted by a serpent holder. It is considered to be based on the Greek God of healing named Asclepius. The story has it that he helped some baby snakes when he was young. These same snakes then licked his ears and made them so clean that he was blessed with a great auditory power such that he could hear what every creature on Earth was saying. He soon won the position of the world’s greatest healer and was given the position of God who respected serpents.

The fact about Ophiuchus is that it has been in existence since the Babylonian era. This was the era when the first zodiac signs were officially named. However it was never given any notice as the Babylonians aligned their zodiac in such a way that the sun fell in an aligned manner to the constellations. Also the period for which this new zodiac existed was just 7 days and therefore it wasn’t ever included.

Parke Kunkle who is from the Minnesota Planetarium Society has discovered Ophiuchus. It is known by the alternate name of Serpentarius, which means the ‘serpent holder’. This sign occurs from November 3oth- December 17th. It is the only zodiac sign that is symbolized by an actual man who is shown holding a serpent. Those who fall under this new and smaller zodiac sign have certain qualities like those of an interpreter or a peacemaker. They also seem to have a desire to help others professionally.

This new zodiac sign was also considered unlucky as it is number 13. It is the only sign to be named after a real person. This sign has been associated with medicine.

Ophiuchus has those people under the signs Capricorn and Sagittarius. To be very precise about the location of this constellation it is found on the Northwest of the Milky Way. The proposal was to squeeze this new sign into the zodiac. By doing so however all the other 12 signs would have to shuffle to allow the new zodiac sign to fit in. This is causing a lot of debate and concern among star followers in the world. Added to this all the signs would have to shift one place to the left, which means that Cancerians would become Gemini, Virgo’s would become Leos so on and so forth.

Ophiuchus has been known as Asclepius among Greeks and Imhotep among Egyptians. Apollo was his father and he had a vast knowledge of medicine. It is said he could return the dead to life. Asclepius is depicted as the serpent bearer and as we all know the snake or serpent is the main symbol for the medical profession even today.

Ophiuchus is known to show compatibility with Capricorn, Cancer, Pisces, Libra and itself. The best match however is believed to be Pisces. Both are water elements and when they meet they offer great sensitivity and intuition to one another. They both are volatile and uncertain and this makes them very adaptive. Sagittarius was never apt for Pisces but if we incorporate the new zodiac sign then Pisces would contain Aries, which is a great match for Sagittarius. Aries and Sagittarius, which were fire elements, would change to water elements.

After a lot of research and speculation astronomers and astrologers have reached a conclusion over Ophiuchus. They are of the belief that it is a new constellation and has nothing to do with the science of astrology. Astrology is based entirely on the concept of seasons and planets. The zodiac signs on the other hand are divided as per the day and night proportions seen throughout the year. Therefore Ophiuchus, which was always in existence, will not be included in the zodiac signs as a new zodiac sign. All the star and horoscope watchers can now heave a sih of relief.
