It is a common practice to read your horoscope in the newspaper but most of the times we do not actually know the history of the horoscope in general. The origin of the concept of horoscope dates back to 3,000 years in Babylonia. It developed further in Greece during ancient times. Important personalities of the middle ages relied heavily on their horoscope and astrological charts. Horoscopes are based on the 12 sun signs. Each and every astrologer will have his own unique way of interpreting the horoscope and therefore every newspaper has varying horoscopes.
The word horoscope stems from the Latin word ‘horoscopus’ and literally means ‘the observer or watcher of the time of birth’. Horoscopy is the noun form of the word horoscope and is the science of reading horoscopes. It has been used since the 17th century. Reading even the most basic horoscope takes time and therefore people prefer to get it read from a reliable source.
A horoscope helps in determining major life aspects like career, marriage, health and childbirth. The recommendation is taking before making any major decisions in life so as to not suffer from the decision. A very basic example of a horoscope is the one appearing in newspapers, which though less detailed are enjoyable to read.
Since the history of horoscopes there has been a very close link between the zodiac segment that an individual is born in and his qualities. For example the Libra sign, which is depicted with ‘scales’, denotes a sense of ‘balance’. Every person is born under s specific sign as per the date and time of birth. For instance a Piscean is born between the dates February 20- March 20. All the 12 zodiac signs have been named after a particular constellation. Every person gets their positive and negative character traits depending on their zodiac sign. This helps in formulating the horoscope of an individual. All these signs are assigned to 4 elements namely: Earth, Fire, Air and Water.

The signs included under this element are Virgo, Taurus and Capricorn. It is said that people whose signs are under this element react to situations very slowly and quietly. Their horoscope generally shows a high endurance level and deep-rooted emotions.
- Fire
The signs under this element include Leo, Sagittarius and Aries. The horoscope of such individuals suggests that they have a very good imagination power. However these people are very impulsive in their actions and respond very quickly to certain emotional situations.
- Air
Libra, Gemini and Aquarius are certain signs that fall under this group. The characteristics found in the horoscope of these individuals include an ability to express their desires, expectations and feelings in a rational manner. They are very energetic and vibrant at heart.
- Water
Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are the water signs. The horoscopes of individuals born under this element reveal that they are very sensitive. They are highly romantic and imaginative too.

As entertaining as it can be to read a horoscope, knowing and checking them for being genuine is also equally important. A horoscope is not merely a piece of entertainment. A full proof horoscope can be made by using the signs from the sun and studying the alignment of the planets. - Simple chart
A simple chart gives information about a group of people whose birth fall under the same zodiac sign. The information is very generalized for the group of people who are of the same zodiac sign. The best example of a simple chart is the daily and weekly horoscopes that appear in newspapers or websites.
- Natal chart
These are charts that are personalized and created for a specific person. These charts show the movement and transition of various stars and constellations throughout the person’s life. Making these charts is expensive and has to be made by a professional astrologer.
Overall there are many common features that a horoscope chart shares. A circular graph is used to indicate the movement of planets. The angles of movement help to indicate and predict the future. It is a very important to make sure that the astrologer reading your horoscope is well known and reliable.
